In addition to being a founder of Smart Chicago, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is also a large and consistent funder.
Any project that is not specifically tied to a funder exists solely due to the continuing grants of the MacArthur Foundation to our fiscal agent, the Chicago Community Trust. In addition, they provide key, targeted support for important new initiatives and experiments. Here's a list:
- Smart Chicago managed the Hive Learning Network for the MacArthur Foundation in 2010 and 2011, and received funds to support this work
- In December 2012, MacArthur provided funding for our inaugural #CivicSummer
- In April 2014, MacArthur provided funding for our inaugural Chicago School of Data project
- In December 2014, MacArthur provided funding for the expansion of Connect Chicago
- In December 2015, MacArthur provided funding for Smart Chicago work on the OpenGrid project
- In January 2016, MacArthur provided funding for an independent evaluation of the Smart Chicago Collaborative
