Data Potluck is a meetup group run by Young-Jin Kim, Matt Gee, and Nicholas Mader that helps to connect the nonprofit and data science worlds.

One of the features of the meetup is an exercise called Data Tasting  where the group takes a set of data from a government agency or non-profit organization and figures out ways to make that data useful to the agency.

Federal Government Challenges Post-Safety Datapalooza

At last month’s White House Safety Datapalooza, several federal agencies issued challenges to civic minded developers to help the federal government solve real world problems ranging from health care, public safety, education, and more.

Many of the previous winners of these challenges have been civic startups who have leveraged open data released on data.gov to help find creative ways to solve problems.

OpenGov Hack Night: @ChicagoCDO unveils new OpenData Report

Tom Schenk Jr, Director of Analytics at the City of Chicago, unveiled the City of Chicago’s 2013 Open Data Report.

The Open Data Report overviews the Open Data Executive Order, initiatives accomplished during 2013 such as the launch of the Chicago Data Dictionary, the progress of Chicago’s data portal, and what to expect in 2014.

This past weekend, health care policy makers, practitioners, and technologists gathered together at 1871 to talk about how we could make public health data work here in Illinois.

The event was hosted by a number of partners including the Health Data Consortium, Illinois Department of Public Health, the California HealthCare Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
