Sandhya Devaraj is an Americorps member who has been working with Smart Chicago and Family Focus to help with our Smart Health Center program.
Last week, Devaraj stopped by the Family Focus – Hermosa to talk about health data and what it shows about the Hermosa neighborhood.
During the presentation, Devaraj demonstrated the Chicago Health Atlas to show health statistics for the Hermosa neighborhood.
By looking at the site, you can see that the Hermosa neighborhood is healthier than the average neighborhood except in two areas: Infant Mortality and Liver Disease.
In Englewood, another neighborhood where Family Focus is active, the opposite is true with health indicators being worse than average across the board.
For over thirty-five years, Family Focus has partnered with Chicago-area families living in underserved communities to give their children the best possible start in life. It’s mission is to promote the well-being of children from birth by supporting and strengthening their families in and with their communities, and is realized through comprehensive family support services. Family Focus has three sites that are part of the Smart Health Center project; Englewood, North Lawndale and Hermosa Centers.
